PHOOEY Architects: Upcycling
This publication was created to coincide with the Melbourne School of Design Alumni Retrospective exhibition of the work of PHOOEY Architects. PHOOEY are well known for their environmentally sustainable work, particularly through innovative use of salvaged materials (a process called upcycling), and exposing of beauty within everyday materials. It seemed only appropriate to embrace their approach for this, so we started with a base material (paper) that is 100% recycled, chlorine free and produced carbon neutral, and determined the size of the publication from economical use of the base sheet. We also used over-printed makeready sheets from the cover as invitations to the exhibition closing and publication launch, as well as over-printed makeready sheets from the text pages for posters announcing the show. The untrimmed top edge reduced paper waste while exposing a beautiful detail not often seen - this also necessitated the reader really engage with the publication, by ripping pages open to look and read.
